Below are some of the most commonly asked questions with our answers, but if you have a question not answered here, please call us on 01489 575372 or send us an email.

  • Do you need to see where I want my marquee sited for outdoor weddings?

    Yes, it is really important that we visit the site. Apart from giving us the opportunity of meeting you to discuss your ideas in more detail, it gives us a chance to survey the site for suitability – It’s too important a day to leave things to chance! Would you choose your wedding dress off the peg without trying it on?

    After the site visit, we will provide you with a fully itemised quotation with scaled drawings to show you exactly what we can offer. These site visits are free and without obligation.

  • How do I work out the size of the marquee I need?

    We send out a guide to capacity with our brochure but this is just a rough guide. It does not take into account the bar, buffet or dance floor areas so this is why the site visit is so important as we will advise you on the size of marquee best suited for your event.

  •  My garden may be unsuitable – could you suggest an alternative venue where I could have my wedding?

    We have a list of wonderful venues; please give us a call so that we can help you find a suitable one.

  • Do you supply heating in the marquee for outdoor weddings?

    Yes we do. Even in the depths of winter we can ensure that your marquee will be snug and warm.

  • How does the marquee work if the weather is really hot?

    Because of our unique system, we will supply enough opening windows to ensure that even on the hottest day your marquee will be cool and shady. This is when our marquees come into their own as you will be able to open them up to allow your guests to spill out into the garden.

  • Can you supply marquees that attach to an existing building?

    Due to our unique system our marquees can be linked and joined to form a variety of shapes and sizes and are particularly well designed to link up to buildings. We can create those intimate areas that are so popular for weddings – chill out areas, bar and lounging areas, separate dance floor areas, linked areas for gaming tables – the options are endless!

  • When do you erect the marquees?

    Usually we pitch the marquee two or three days prior to your event and take it down within a similar time scale. However, we would always liaise you with and try to fit in with any requests but to achieve this, the earlier we are notified the better.

How do I hire a marquee?

Marquees are the perfect pop up venue that offer flexible options for almost any type of event. Once you’ve decided to hold your function in a marquee there are still a number of decisions to make on what can be a large range of important features, some of which you may not have considered.

Your first choices to make are the date of your event and then it’s location.  If you would like any assistance with finding a venue, Southern Marquees can offer advice and recommendations.  Once the date and venue are settled it is time to find the right marquee company for you. Any good marquee company will be able to offer advice on everything else you will need to consider.

At Southern Marquees we make it a priority for our customers to get exactly the finished product they desire with the absolute minimum amount of hassle and stress. Your big day is too important for us to leave anything to chance. From your initial contact with us we’ll use our more than 30 years of experience and invest a lot of time and effort into tailoring your day to your specific requirements to ensure that your marquee will exceed your expectations.

Can I hire a marquee over the phone?

When trying to choose a marquee company be wary of anyone who gives you a firm quote over the phone without seeing the venue or discussing each aspect of your event. The sheer scale of the customisation possibilities mean even marquees of the exact same design and size can have a large difference in price.

The best you could hope for solely over the phone is a very vague and imprecise estimate, and even then with all the options available making comparisons between companies based on price alone is a very difficult task as some like to quote for the bare minimum as standard, whereas more respectable companies will give a more realistic valuation.

Should I meet marquee suppliers?

The only way to get a true idea of what sort of marquee you need and who is best to provide it is by meeting somebody in person, ideally at your prospective site, and having a full discussion including as many details of your event as possible. This allows for the highest degree of accuracy within a quote as well as highlighting any practical issues you may not be aware of but that an experienced marquee company would have overcome thousands of times over.

It is also a very good idea to meet with your marquee supplier in person to build up a relationship with them. Working closely on what is potentially a very personal occasion requires a good, trusting relationship and complimentary personalities.

At Southern Marquees from the beginning of our busy season (May-September) we also offer you the opportunity to meet us at a marquee which we would recently have erected to get a first-hand close up view of the quality of our final product, as well as give you a chance to view real examples of the sort of options that are available.

The marquees to view are at selected venues and by appointment only.  We would never take anyone into a private garden!

Will my marquee supplier want to see my site?

Due to its importance we at Southern Marquees always insist upon a free, no obligation site visit before giving a quote (unless you are using a site recommended by us on which we have built before).

One of our friendly team will visit you and gather as much information as possible, both in terms of the facts and logistics of the event, but also to help try to gauge the less tangible aspects such as the required mood and feel of your function and offer practical ideas and solutions to accomplish your aims.

We are also very realistic in our dealings with our customers. For example, if your site is not big enough for the size of tent required to hold the number of guests you foresee we will tell you. Part of our service is to give honest answers and thorough advice.

What should I look for in a marquee hire quote?

After opening discussions and once an initial brief has been decided upon a more realistic quote can be provided. It is worth bearing in mind that due to the flexible nature of a marquee if you do have changes you’d like to make (for example the number of guests changes or your plans for entertainment or dining escalate) then more often than not changes can be made quite simply, and as long as you are provided with an itemised breakdown of costs these changes can be clearly reflected in the final price.

Getting an itemised breakdown assures you that there will be no hidden costs so your figures can be reasonably precise when trying to plan ahead and budget.

Birthday party – 13th October 2018 – Clanfield

Hi Mandy,

I just wanted to thank you and all of your team of helpers so much for putting up and taking down of the wonderful marquee. For a second year running the ‘boys’ have been so polite and efficient and made it all look so easy. They were never in our way and just got on with what needed to be done, all in all we were so impressed. The garden was left looking just as good as when they arrived, no tyre marks, damage to grass, left over debris, nails etc.

The wedding was an amazing day and everyone had a fantastic time. I’m just hoping our third daughter gives us at least a year off before she announces anything! Very happy to act as a reference should you ever need one.

Dear Hugh,

Just a short note to thank you for donating the use of your marquee on Saturday. Given the windy conditions we were more than grateful for something as stable and well anchored. In fact we did use it to anchor a smaller gazebo to serve as a preparation area. Another gazebo sheltering the performers was not so lucky and had to be removed as it was in danger of enveloping the accompanist.

We don’t have a final number yet but it looks as if we will raise about £2700 for the Jubilee Sailing Trust – a great result!

We used Southern Marquees for a joint 60th and 21st – They provided the most amazing marquee, lighting, tables, chairs and decoration which all come together and looked wonderful!! And when the weather came into play they were quick to provide us with a second tent which saved the party.
Mandy and Hugh were so helpful, they pointed us in the direction of catering companies – we went for Forking-out caterers (Salisbury), which we couldn’t recommend enough. On top of this they recommended an extremely good dj, Toby Oakley (New Forest) who provided an amazing evening of music and entertainment.

Duncan and I were married at Bossington House on Saturday 6th August. We approached Southern Marquees firstly for our Golden Wedding celebrations and more recently for a family wedding reception.
From the outset they produced plans and suggestions and then put it all into practice exactly as we wanted. Nothing was too much trouble and continued liaison with the caterers resulted in a smoothly run and faultless occasion.
It was fascinating to see the speed with which the marquees were assembled by a team of young men and when they were later removed and packed away the garden looked quite bereft without them.
I cannot recommend Southern Marquees, with Hugh and Mandy and their team highly enough. Their professionalism, hard work and cheerfulness ensured we were able to relax and enjoy ourselves without a care in the world!

Wedding Guest Guide

So much has been written for the bride and groom about the do’s and don’ts for their weddings that I feel it is time for some suggestions on how to be a good guest…

Over the last few years there has been a definite decline in the guests approach to being invited to a wedding.  They are expecting and demanding more and I feel this should now be addressed.  The following might sound a bit brutal but believe me, I have had to deal with some extremely stressed brides who have been driven to distraction because of the thoughtlessness of their guests.

First of all, every guest should realise they are lucky to be invited!  The individual cost will work out somewhere in the region of £60.00 per head min.

When receiving the invitation, it is good manners to reply as quickly as possible with a yes please or not able to attend.  Do not leave it until the week prior to the wedding – firstly, it looks as if you were waiting to see if you get a better offer and at its worst, it just shows lack of concern for your friend.  The anxiety of not knowing how many people will be attending is one of the most stressful things our brides are coping with.  Table plans have to be drawn up and done again as people announce they are coming at the last minute or cancelling.  Caterers will want final numbers a minimum of two weeks prior to the date so it is essential everyone has replied in good time.  Don’t assume you will be expected – a written reply, either by email or the old way of a note, is essential. Once you have agreed to attend;

Don’t think you have any right to expect a say in what the menu will be.  No one in this day and age will die of hunger if presented with a plate of food that is not to their liking.  Either make an effort and eat what you can, or if you happen to be one of the minority with a major allergy to a certain type of food – bring your own.  Do not expect the bride to have to cater for your fads, or dietary problems.  It is just bad manners to expect an individual meal to be prepared especially for you.  We had an example of this problem taken to the extreme.  A wedding with 70 guests and 56 of them had notified the bride of allergies!

Children.  It must be awful for small ones to be expected to be on their best behaviour throughout a long day at a wedding.  It might be worth thinking about asking a grandparent or trusted adult to look after the little gems, while you have a day for yourselves.  Not many weddings are geared up for small children but if you do need to bring them along, if they need high chairs or special seats, you should consider taking your own.  Don’t expect high chairs to be supplied! Again, this is just another worry for the bride, which is what we are trying to avoid!

Photographs after the wedding ceremony can take a long time to take so be prepared to hang around and don’t whinge!  You might consider having a more comfortable pair of shoes to wear for this moment.

Follow the simple suggestions above and you will be everyone’s dream guest!  It’s not rocket science but it is surprising how many brides are being sent into a complete spin because their guests are being a nightmare!
